When pregnant, most women experience lucid dreaming and vivid nightmares. There appears to be some common themes to these nightmares, giving birth to animals being just one. For this second trimester of The Egg, The Womb, The Head and The Moon, I have continued with my small water colour retablos paintings, but this time illustrating pregnancy nightmares as told by women on internet chat forums.
This second painting reads:
I dreamt I gave birth to a litter of kittens, then I ate them off a white china plate.

This has just brought back a dream of mine. I dreamt I gave birth to a whale. It was still born and post-birth it was placed in a pickling jar for me to take home.

A strange seeming contradiction, although not uncommon in the animal kingdom, eating one’s young. My estranged partner embarrassed me after the birth of my daughter by asking if the afterbirth could be cooked in the hospital kitchens. They did bring the afterbirth in to show us. It did not look delicious to me.
